A clothing swap is a pop-up event where people bring clean, gently used clothing.
We then set everything up like a “store” on clothing racks and tables.
After a brief check-in circle, everyone goes “shopping” for clothes, and takes home some new pieces.
It’s a joyful way to refresh your wardrobe, reduce waste, and connect with others.
- 1:30 – 2:30 pm, setup
Guests arrive with clothing, shoes, and accessories in good condition. We set everything up together on racks and tables like a free “store.” No “shopping” happens during this time.
- 2:30 pm, check-in-circle
We gather briefly to welcome everyone, share guidelines, and build a sense of community. - After the circle, “shopping”
Everyone is invited to browse and choose new pieces, as many as they want.
Please bring items that are clean, gently used, and in good condition, including clothing, shoes, and accessories. Bring only what you would feel happy giving to a friend.
We can’t accept stained, torn, or heavily worn items, undergarments, or items that need major repair. If you wouldn’t feel comfortable gifting it to someone you care about, it’s probably not right for the swap.
Bringing items is encouraged, but not required. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the event.
We kindly request that you try on clothes at the swap. We provide private areas where you can try things on. This way, anything that doesn’t fit can go back into circulation for someone else to discover and enjoy.
There is no strict limit. We simply ask that you take what you genuinely need and love, and leave the rest for others. The spirit of the swap is generosity and mindfulness.
We donate the extra clothes to our partner nonprofit Hand to Hand to be shared with our neighbors who are less materially privileged.
Hand to Hand hosts events where the clothes are set up like a “store” so folks can “go shopping” for clothes, but the clothes are free.
Clothing that is torn or stained is taken to the Santa Monica College Fashion Department so the fabric can be upcycled into new clothing.
Our events are open to all genders and all ages. Community Threads is a welcoming space for everyone.
There is a $28 admission fee at the door to support the nonprofit. If you are having financial challenges, please contact us ahead of time so we can make arrangements.
