Community Threads is a grassroots initiative that uses fashion to strengthen community, reduce waste, and make quality clothing accessible to all. We host joyful pop-up clothing swaps where community comes together to share what they no longer need and discover new pieces to love. Each event is set up like a welcoming free “store” filled with color, creativity, and connection, reminding us that abundance grows when we gather.
The clothing collected at our events continues to serve the community long after the event ends. Extra items are shared with unhoused neighbors through free pop-up “stores” and professional attire is donated to the Santa Monica College career closet to support students stepping into the workforce. Through these efforts, clothing stays in circulation and out of landfills while meeting real human needs with dignity and care.
Community Threads operates under the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Earth Rights Institute, and all contributions are tax deductible, EIN 30-0029920. Our events are supported by small donations at the door, as well as the generosity of sponsors, with no one turned away for financial reasons.
We believe sustainability can be joyful, fashion can be generous, and community can be built one shared outfit at a time.
